Lower Chitral hosts two-day trade exhibition promoting women’s economic empowerment and local crafts

Chitral (Chitral Express) — A two-day trade exhibition jointly organized by the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) and the Chitral Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) commenced in Lower Chitral, marking a significant step toward promoting local entrepreneurship and empowering women economically.

The event, titled Chitral Expo 2025, features over 70 stalls showcasing a wide array of locally produced goods, reflecting the region’s cultural richness and craftsmanship. From handmade crafts, woodwork, and Chitrali caps to intricately designed cloaks, jewelry, and household items, the exhibition presents the best of Chitral’s artistic heritage to visitors from across the country.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by prominent figures including Professor Dr. Sanaullah, Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Chitral, and Nauman Bashir, Director General of the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan. The dignitaries emphasized that the expo aims to provide a platform for local artisans—particularly women—to connect with national and international markets, enhance business networking, and receive training opportunities that will strengthen Chitral’s economic base.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Sanaullah highlighted that such events serve as a bridge between traditional craftsmanship and modern commerce. “Chitral’s economy depends greatly on its small businesses and handicrafts. This expo is a crucial initiative to empower women entrepreneurs and help them gain fair compensation for their hard work,” he said.

Nauman Bashir added that TDAP’s collaboration with local institutions is focused on ensuring sustainable economic growth in Chitral. “Women in Chitral possess exceptional skills in crafting unique handmade products, but due to limited market access, they rarely receive the recognition or financial reward they deserve. This event is part of our broader strategy to bring their work to the forefront and ensure they are connected with buyers beyond regional boundaries,” he remarked.

Visitors from various parts of Pakistan, including business representatives and tourists, showed great interest in Chitrali handicrafts and cultural items. Many participants noted that such expos not only boost trade but also serve as a catalyst for promoting tourism in the region, as visitors get a glimpse of the area’s artistic excellence and cultural identity.

Organizers expressed hope that the Chitral Expo would pave the way for more such initiatives in the future, enabling local producers—especially women—to earn a sustainable livelihood from their talents. They also emphasized that linking traditional craftsmanship to digital and commercial platforms will open new horizons for Chitral’s artisans and strengthen the region’s role in Pakistan’s creative economy.

The event concluded with a shared commitment to continue supporting local industries, improving market access, and ensuring that Chitral’s rich cultural heritage thrives through economic empowerment and innovation.
