Chitral (Chitral Express): Jamaat-e-Islami Lower Chitral chief Wajihuddin has alleged that some district administration officials are abusing their authority and mistreating citizens in the name of an anti-encroachment campaign. Strongly condemning the demolition of a school building owned by former district nazim Maghfirat Shah, he gave the government a 24-hour ultimatum to take legal action against the officials concerned, warning that otherwise Jamaat-e-Islami would adopt a vigorous protest strategy.
Speaking at an emergency press conference alongside Jamaat-e-Islami leaders and civil society representatives, Wajihuddin said that Additional Deputy Commissioner General Abdul Salam and Assistant Commissioner Headquarters Adnan Haider Malooki had allegedly demolished the school building owned by former district nazim Maghfirat Shah without fulfilling legal requirements. He said the relevant laws require that the affected party be served notice and given an opportunity to appeal before action is taken against encroachments, but these legal requirements were disregarded in this case.
Referring to documents, he said that in 2000, at the request of local residents, Maghfirat Shah had provided a portion of his personal land in exchange for an equivalent portion along the link road, with the approval of the then executive engineer of the Communications and Works (C&W) Department. He said that in 2016, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had also investigated the matter and cleared it.
At the press conference, he accused the officials concerned of acting without fulfilling legal requirements and of disregarding the circumstances of the former district nazim’s family. He warned that if their demands were not accepted, Jamaat-e-Islami would announce a tough course of action.
Maulana Jamshed, Abdul Haq, Fazal Rabi Jan, Advocate Zafar Hayat, District Bar President Mominur Rahman, Riaz Ahmad Diwan Baig, Qari Abdul Rahman Gujar and others were also present at the press conference.
Later, Jamaat-e-Islami workers held a protest march to Ataliq Bridge and staged a rally there. In addition to Wajihuddin, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Lower Chitral chief and former member of the provincial assembly Maulana Abdul Rahman also addressed the gathering and condemned the incident.
Meanwhile, in a statement, the Lower Chitral district administration claimed that during the anti-encroachment campaign, members of an alleged land-grabbing mafia opened fire on district administration officials and Levies personnel. Additional Deputy Commissioner General Abdul Salam and Assistant Commissioner Headquarters Adnan Haider Malooki remained unharmed, while two Levies personnel were injured. The injured personnel were taken to the District Headquarters Hospital in Lower Chitral.
According to the administration’s statement, the firing was carried out by former district nazim Haji Maghfirat Shah, who was accused of allegedly occupying government land, which was reclaimed from him. Deputy Commissioner and Lower Chitral Levies Commandant Ehsanullah visited the hospital with other officials and enquired after the injured personnel.
