Truck Seized and Driver Arrested for Timber Smuggling in Chitral

Chitral, July 15, 2023 – In a recent development, a truck has been impounded, and its driver has been apprehended for attempting to smuggle deodar timber out of Chitral, according to forest department officials. The incident occurred when forest department personnel and Chitral Levies intercepted the truck at the Baradam joint check post and discovered illegal deodar timber being transported.

The driver of the truck has been arrested, and the forest department has recorded the damages under Forest Acct 2022, highlighting the gravity of the offense. Further investigation is underway to determine the extent of the illegal timber smuggling operation.

Local authorities revealed that the truck was transporting the timber from Arandu, a clear indication of the illegal practice of cutting trees and smuggling timber out of Chitral. Unfortunately, such incidents are not uncommon in the region, and the lack of stringent measures to curb these activities is a cause for concern.

It has been widely acknowledged that individuals with influential connections in the power corridors often perpetrate such illegal practices, making it even more challenging to tackle the issue effectively.

The incident serves as a reminder of the urgent need for stronger enforcement and stricter measures to protect Chitral’s valuable natural resources. Authorities and relevant stakeholders are called upon to take immediate action to curb the illicit timber trade and preserve the region’s precious forests.

ChitralExpress will continue to monitor developments in this case and provide updates as they become available.
